Most people arrive at ceramic coating after years of waxing. They want to know one thing before they commit: is it actually worth stepping up, or is wax fine?
Here is the honest answer from a shop that has stripped a lot of failed wax off a lot of Ontario cars.
The Three Products, Plainly
Carnauba wax is a natural product that sits on top of your paint. It produces a warm, deep shine that a lot of enthusiasts still prefer on show cars. It does not bond to the clear coat. It rests on it, and it washes away.
Paint sealant is synthetic. It bonds loosely to the paint and lasts noticeably longer than wax while giving up some of that warm glow in exchange for a sharper, more reflective finish.
Ceramic coating is a liquid silica compound that chemically bonds with the clear coat and cures into a semi permanent layer. It does not wash off. It wears down slowly over years instead of disappearing over months.

Why Ontario Changes The Answer
In a mild climate the gap between these three is smaller. In Ontario it is not.
Road salt runs from November through March across Richmond Hill and York Region. Salt is the specific thing wax is worst at resisting. A wax layer applied in October is functionally gone by January, right when your paint needs protection most. You end up protected during the easy months and exposed during the hard ones.
Sealant holds up better through a single winter, but it still degrades on a schedule that means reapplying before the next one.
Ceramic coating is the only one of the three that survives multiple Ontario winters on a single application. That is the entire practical argument for it. Not gloss, not water beading, but the fact that it is still there in February of its third year.

Which One Fits You
Wax makes sense if you enjoy detailing your own car, you store it indoors, and you are not driving it through winter. On a summer weekend car, wax is a perfectly reasonable choice.
Sealant makes sense as a middle step if you want longer protection than wax without professional application, and you do not mind redoing it roughly annually.

Is ceramic coating better than wax?
For durability and salt resistance in Ontario, yes, by a wide margin. Wax lasts weeks to a few months. A professional ceramic coating lasts years. Wax still has a following for the warm glow it gives show cars, but it is not a winter protection product.
Can you put wax over a ceramic coating?
You can, but there is no reason to. Wax on top of a coating masks the coating’s hydrophobic surface with a shorter lived layer. Use a coating safe maintenance spray instead.
Does ceramic coating stop scratches and rock chips?
No. Ceramic coating resists chemical etching, salt, and UV, and it adds hardness against very light marring. It has no thickness to absorb impact. Paint protection film is the product for chips.
Do I need paint correction before a ceramic coating?
Usually yes. Coating adds gloss, and gloss makes existing swirl marks more visible rather than less. Correcting first means you are protecting a clean finish instead of sealing in defects.
