Every November, the same thing happens. The first salt truck rolls down Yonge Street, and our phone starts ringing with people asking if it is too late to coat their car.

Usually it is not. But the earlier you book, the better the result. Here is why fall is the best time of year for ceramic coating in Richmond Hill, and what you need to know before you book.

Why Fall Beats Every Other Season

Your paint is in its best shape of the year. Summer is over, so bugs, tree sap and bird droppings are behind you. Salt and grime have not started yet. That makes it the easiest time to clean and correct the paint before it gets sealed in.

The coating gets to cure before the hard part starts. A ceramic coating needs time to fully harden. Coating in October or early November means it is fully cured before the roads get salted, usually mid to late November in the GTA.

Winter is when the coating earns its keep. Road salt, slush and brine are the toughest test your paint faces all year. A coating applied in spring spends its first months on easy duty. One applied in fall goes straight to work when it matters.

Can You Ceramic Coat a Car in Cold Weather?

Yes, as long as it is done indoors. Most coatings need a warm, dry room to bond and cure properly. Outdoor or garage jobs in cold weather often cure soft and wear off early.

At MDM, every coating is applied in our warm indoor bay, so the outdoor temperature does not affect the result. What changes in winter is the time after you drive away.

Here is the timeline we recommend:

  • First 24 hours: keep the car dry and out of rain or snow if you can.
  • First week: no washing, and avoid salted roads where possible.
  • First two weeks: the coating reaches full hardness. After that, it is ready for whatever winter brings.

That is why booking by mid November matters. It gives the coating its full two weeks before the heavy salt season starts.

What Ceramic Coating Does Against Road Salt

A ceramic coating creates a slick, hard layer on top of your clear coat. Salt, slush and grime struggle to stick to it, and what does stick rinses off much more easily.

In practice, that means:

  • Faster, easier winter washes
  • Less salt residue left on the paint between washes
  • Protection against the dull, hazy look salt leaves on unprotected paint
  • A finish that still looks glossy in March

Wax and sealants cannot do this through a full Ontario winter. We explain why in our ceramic coating vs wax vs sealant comparison.

What It Will Not Do

Ceramic coating is not armour. It will not stop rock chips from highway driving or deep scratches. For that, you need paint protection film on the front of the car.

Many of our clients pair the two: film on the hood, bumper and mirrors, and ceramic coating on everything else. Our PPF vs ceramic coating guide breaks down when each one makes sense.

Do This Before You Book

A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. If your paint has swirl marks or light scratches, they will be sealed in and actually look more obvious under the extra gloss.

That is why every coating at MDM starts with a paint inspection. If the paint needs it, we do paint correction first, so you are protecting a clean finish for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too late to get ceramic coating before winter?

Not usually. Book by mid November so the coating has about two weeks to fully cure before heavy salt season. If the salt is already down, we can still coat indoors. You will just need to be more careful with the car for the first week.

Can ceramic coating be applied in cold weather?

Yes, if it is applied indoors in a warm, dry space. Cold air slows curing and can cause the coating to cure soft, which is why we never coat outdoors in fall or winter.

How soon can I drive on salted roads after ceramic coating?

You can drive the car right away, but try to avoid salted roads and washing for the first week. The coating reaches full hardness in about two weeks.

Is ceramic coating worth it in Canada?

For a daily driver that sees Ontario winters, yes. It is the only paint protection that lasts through several winters on one application. A professional coating lasts 3 to 9 years depending on the tier. See how long ceramic coating lasts in Canadian weather.

Does ceramic coating protect against road salt?

It makes salt much harder to stick to your paint and much easier to wash off. It does not replace regular winter washes, but it makes each one faster and safer for your paint.
